The Incredible Hulk

#369

April 1990

mild mannered scientist Bruce Banner turns into nasty grey giant (nasty and very cool!)

    Miscellaneous Comments:    9 September, 1999

Earlier tonight I read Aquaman: Time And Tide #2. And it was good.

But not that good. Not as good as what Peter David can do.

As good as what he did on The Incredible Hulk.

    With issues like these.

Type of Series: Anti-Hero; Action-Adventure and - with Peter David writing - Comedy.

Similar Comics: I dunno. DC's The Demon was kinda similar, I think. And Ghost Rider. In that both featured ordinary guys turning into something else.

Strengths: The writing. Peter David's script has heart and humour. His characterisation of Crimson Commando is commendable.

    Weaknesses:

Plotting: Bruce Banner meets a family in South Carolina and befriends them. Freedom Force are on The Hulk's trail and when they catch up with Banner a fight starts and the family's young son is injured.

    Logic:

Originality: I dunno.Bruce was always befriending families.

Ending: Superb. Almost every panel on the last page is special in some way.

Re-Readability: This issue is very re-readable.

Impressive Characters: The Grey Hulk. He is so cool, and so nasty.

In this issue, both Crimson Commando and Mystique are very impressive. David's writing humanises them.

Impressive Writers: Peter David is the writer here, and this issue is slap dab in the middle of his awesome run on the series.

Impressive Artists: Dale Keown had only just started work in the series. This is his third issue. Bob McLeon is doing the inking and their work is beautiful.

Three Things I Really Like About This Issue:

It made me laugh out loud. When The Hulk took on Freedom Force it was hilarious.

It almost made me cheer out loud. I know it's a bit of a cliché but the arrival of The Hulk - just in time to save Banner's skin - was adrenaline pumping kind of stuff.

It brought a lump to my throat. When the child went down and The Hulk changed tact, with Crimson Commando following suit, it was a lovely moment.
