    August 8th, 1993:

    GOOD.

    This is a solid start to the new series. Impressive, interesting and full of potential. The characters are strong and likeable. As with Encounter At Farpoint all of the characters come across splendidly. This pilot is better than Encounter At Farpoint and Where No Man Has Gone Before, but not as good as The Cage.

    The FX are good.

    As an episode it is slow and unimpressive, until Sisko starts to debate time, etc., with the aliens in the wormhole. At that stage, I sat up straight and started to pay attention. The idea of an intelligence inside the wormhole was brilliant. And Brooks gives quite a performance in these scenes.

Characters:

Sisko;

Kira, Dax, O'Brien;

Odo, Quark;

Picard, Jake, Nog, Kai Opaka, Gul Dukat.

    Best Actor: Armin Shimerman.

    My Favourite Character: Kira. I must have a thing for First Officers.

    There isn't much conflict, after all. I think these people will get along very well, eventually. Even Quark will eventually do something noble and heroic.

    Interesting ideas here: our answers much come from within; we are shaped by the past, yet we would do well to forget it. The idea of Sisko missing his wife so dreadfully is successfully touching.

    DS9 will undoubtedly produce episodes that are classics. This isn't one.

GRADE: A

("A" because it is good.)

    Funnily enough, this stands out as one of my all-time favourite episodes.
