Maybe the best of
the often cringeworthy '70s films.

It's easy to be sceptical, especially
when this film came out after "Godzilla vs. Megalon" which,
it has to be said, has its somewhat embarrassing moments
(the drop-kick...), but I was particularly surprised, and
pleased, when I watched this for the first time. The dub is
better than most, with few scenes marred by jarring
dialogue, and barring a few "throw the empty suit around"
scenes, the effects are good for their time. Most notable
are the pyrotechnics at the oil refinery - very reminiscent
of Gerry Anderson's work - and the human-to-ape facial
transformations as the Black Hole aliens meet their ends at
the hands of the heroes. Even King Caesar isn't all that bad
(and that may earn me some flak!), although the magnetic
Godzilla thing seems rather out-of-place in the Godzilla
"mythos".
This is the first time this movie's been
available in the UK. At such a low price (about $10), and
without any of the "Boy aren't these movies cheezy"
packaging (internal or external) that "cult" material often
gets over here, this is well worth the investment.
Well done, Carlton!

Simply the best -
so far...

I jumped at the chance to get myself a
copy of this much-acclaimed Heisei Era movie when in New
York in May, and when I got home, I was so very glad my
family had bought a video-recorder that was capable of
playing both our own PAL format tapes and US NTSC
recordings!
I was bowled over by this. I'd already
seen "G vs. KING GHIDORAH" and "G. vs MOTHRA" from the
Nineties series, and was much impressed, but this snatched
the trophy away. Admittedly, the dub does struggle
occasionally, but that doesn't take anything away from the
orgy of Kaiju action, focussing on what has to be the
best-looking Godzilla ever and a quite stunning adversary.
The Super X-II scenes may seem below par when viewed after
seeing today's CGI aircraft and starships, but I am an
unrepentant fan of such things as THUNDERBIRDS, and the
battles with Super X-II hit the spot for me.
I pray that someone will see the light in
the UK, and release this in my homeland soon. British fans
should not be denied this masterpiece!
