The Department of Company Militia has a vast number of duties to perform in
order to keep the World of Progress safe. The most common depiction of this department
is the War Worlds such as Dante or Cross. This is an important side of the
department but it is by no means all it does.
The department is in control of the logistics behind all this, the supply lines,
the refitting of it's battalions with the latest in SLA hardware and of course the
fleet of ships that will take all this equipment there.
The SLA Space Defence Corp is a sub division of the department and has the task of
escorting supply ships, patroling the SLA systems and is the first line in a planets
defences.
"The militia? What do I think of it? They gave me Nuke Tendons, a rifle, a suit of armour that'll kick the shit out of yours and they gave me loads of training so's I can kick some Thresher Power suit to a pulp! What do I think of 'em? They're great!!"
Private Libretto. 899sd. deceased.
To most sane operatives, the idea of going to fight on a War World is like asking them to wrestle a Rabid Pig. Suicidal. So just why do thousands of civilliansflock to the department every year?
The department has a successful advertisment campaign and the average civillian can simply walk in sign up and get a free set of Nuke Tendons, a Rifle and a suit of armour, get out there and make a difference. All these benefits and they even get paid up to 3 times the average civillian wage.
To many desperates this is an offer that they simply cannot refuse. The chance to leave Downtown and seek fame and glory on the battlefield whilst providing for the family they will (in all likely hood) never see again.
For places like Dante where the average life expectancy of a grunt is a mere 28 hours many of the recruits never make it. Indeed with the growing number of War Criminals many in the department are thinking of making service within the company life. The implications of this are being carefully thought through and a new contract for employment for these brave soldiers could be imminent.
With all the problems in CS.3 there is an outcry for the banning of the Veterans returning to Mort. A trial run was performed in Mort whereby the applicants were told a return to Mort would be impossible once their tour was over. Intake dropped by over 60% and the trial was dropped. The few, the proud and the brave that sign up know that the chances of survival are slim but fight for SLA and the distant hope that they may return to Mort to reap the rewards. All too often the reward is media attention, the brand of criminal and the prospect of 30 minutes of fame as the hunt of a Gorezone by the freshest Contract Killer in search of the big time.
"I've been in the Militia now for just over a year. There's bareley any of my starting company left. My best friend joined up with me back in 899, he died two weeks ago. The victim of a sniper we never even saw or caught. How do I feel?...I would say bitter."
Private Ipstein. SLA 42nd Infantry Division. Cross.
