The Manchine project is most commonly associated with the legend of the Old Man of Downtown, Digger. People still believe that he is out there and that some of the missing people in their neighbourhood may have been taken by this product of SLA to who knows what fate, is a harsh reality.
The project to create more of these 'Chrome Killers' was aborted (albeit with a brief revival during the Chrome Warrior Era) in favour of the Stormer project and the Manchine faded into history as one of SLA's few mistakes.
Or did it?
"Yeah, we usually don't pay much attention to the 'Manchine' rumour. It's more or less just Darknight scaremongering, but the civilians believe all the superstition of the unholy daemons that stalk the perimeter walls trying to get in. They draw protective runes on their walls to keep these 'evil spirits' of SLA at bay.
I'd say it was all crap but sometimes, just sometimes when someone goes missing near one of the walls there's this quiet that follows the crimescene and it kinda freaks you out. I don't know what does it but we never find 'em. The bodies I mean."

The question of whether the Manchines are still in active duty is officially no. However the inhabitants of Downtown are synical about the promises of SLA and for the people that care to look there are some ugly things to find.
News reports abound of killings, robbings, burgalries, rape etc.. and occasionally a serial killer will emerge that strikes fear into the hearts of the Downtown populace. Most civillians are too busy watching the action on T.V. rather than where it's taking place, in their own back yard.
For the curious few some murders and abductions leave questions in their minds. Why weren't the autopsy reports done by standard SHIVER Morticians? Why were there no witnesses at all? How come shots were fired at the assailant and yet no blood was found other than the victims?. These people have conspiracy theories for just about everything. Those that voice their opinions are watched very closely by SLA and those that incite public curiosity on a large scale usually end up dead. The victim of a tailor made serial killer.
The question still remains though of the nature of the killings. Civillians and Gang Members regularly go missing and no-one claims the kill. Bodies are not found even after extensive searches. The image of unseen killers has slowly built in the Downtown mind that it is now ingrained and a fact of life.
For some people the only true way to find out if the Manchine project is still in operation is to venture into Cannibal Sector One and try to seek out the answer to their questions. Digger. These misguided people form the majority of the Cyber Cults that still exist in and around Rust Alley. One can only hope that their deluded souls can be laid to rest once they meet their metal God.
"Scariest thing I ever did see. Ten bodies diced up like chicken just lying around the room weapons close by hardly used. This guy Clockwork, a Prop, was a mess, his Crackshot torn open like paper.
The worst sight though was the skinnings, 5 people hung from the roof like pieces of meat. All the skin gone from the bodies and the muscles weren't even touched. I tell ya, I don't know who or what did that but I sure as hell don't wanna meet 'em"
