Aramis' Scrapbook II

Here is the scrapbook, continued through the Summer.

Amethyst's Journal
I am looking for a set of dragon alphabet blocks for Aramis. If I don't find any soon, I will have to make them myself. But that should be alright, I will give them to him one at a time and he can learn the sight, sound, smell, taste, and feel of each letter before I give him the next one.

Aramis' Journal
This is so exciting! Amethyst is teaching me my letters!
The first letter is the one called "A".
I like "A". Amethyst says it is my letter and her letter, because our names start with "A". It is a bright, strong, steady letter, with a slightly sweet, spicy smell. It sounds clear and sweet, like a trumpet far away. It feels smooth and soft, but not fuzzy, mushy or slick, it is pretty firm. It will take me a while to understand it completely, but I am eager to learn.
Dragons pronounce this letter's name, "...Ahhayy'a". Amethyst says that is the best she can write it. Even though I can't read yet, I can tell it does not taste quite the same. But that is okay, just as long as you understand it is a little different.

I can't wait to be able to read. :)

April 27, 1998

Amethyst's Journal I never found a set of dragon alphabet blocks for Aramis, so I have decided to make them myself. This will take a long time, because they need to be made so that the little dragon can learn the sight, sound, smell, taste, and feel of each letter. Dragons sense thing very differently than do other creatures.
We dragons can see smells and hear colors; and even sensations have flavors. When we see the blue sky, we smell it too, and hear its voice; it is different on a clear day, a hazy day, or a day when big white clouds go by.
This is why Aramis will experience each letter for a while before he understands it well enough to go to the next letter.

Aramis' Journal
Yesterday I got two new letters--"B" and "C". And today I met the letter "D". Wow!
They are so different from "A"! So roundy and smooth. How can I describe them?
"B" is nice. It is cool and moist to touch, cooler than "A" but not cold. It does not have much smell, but mostly just smells kind of wet, like fresh dew. It tastes a little like a melon, and sounds a little like a flute. It is a very quiet letter compared to "A". When I look at it, my eyes are happy. It is a peaceful letter. It does not take too long to say it, not like "A". But I can tell it will take me longer to write it than "A", once I learn to write. But I think I will like to write all the nice roundy loops.
I like "C" too! It is louder than "B". It is very shiny but not as steady as "A", it wiggles a little for some reason! It smells like something nice baking, maybe a lemon cake. I love lemon cakes. :-q It smells fresh and feels kind of hard, a little like gold. It tastes dry and a little tart. I like gold, but not nearly as much as lemon cakes. It sounds sort of bell-like, but not quite. A little tingly.

Aramis' Journal

How interesting "D" is! It is the letter for dragons, like me! It feels so comfortable, like my own warm peach-fuzzy skin. It is like a pair of comfy pajamas. It tastes fuzzy like a peach, but not sweet--juicy, and a little bit tart. Amethyst says kiwi fruits taste like that. So kiwi fruits taste like "D"; they must be nice fruits. It is so nice to look at, all bluey and greeney colors that make my eyes happy, and don't break off suddenly like the colors of "B". It sounds like a harp string, and smells fresh and clean. Oh, I love "D" almost as much as "A". :)
What an odd letter "E" is. It sticks out all over and is warm and prickly. It makes lots of sounds, like "A". It is kind of a loud letter, like big bells. It tastes warm and dry, a little salty. It smells hot and windy. It is a wild letter, not at all as nice and tame as "B". But it is not a bad letter.

Hey! "b"..."a"..."d"...that makes "bad"! I spelled! Yay!

Amethyst says you can sing with just an "A" and a "D"! I tried it-it sounds like this: Da-da-da, Da Da, dadadadada!!! Neat! Hey, I can read that!! Da, DA!

:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Aramis' Journal Right now I am working hard on "F", "G", and "H".

"F" is a soft letter, it tries to hiss away from me before I can catch it. It is smooth like wood, but also a little rough, like wood, in places. It smells nice, like baking bread, but tastes very little; maybe kind of earthy. It sounds soft and far away, maybe the way a pair of cymbals would sound if they did not crash too hard. It is woodsy and muted, and holds very still, as if it were waiting for something. I know that sounds strange when I said before that it slips away from me!! But still is how it _looks_, not how you say it. Does that make sense?
"G" is very hard compared to "F". It is rich and colorful, a sort of vain little letter. But the small "g" is bubbly and funny. It has more of a sense of humor. It tastes wet, but not very flavorful, almost like mineral water. I like sweet, melon-y "B" better. It feels pebbly and slick at the same time, like some types of clay things that are bumpy, but smoothly glazed. It sounds deep; Amethyst says it sounds a little like a tuba. So tubas sound like "G". It has a hard sound and a softer sound, but the soft sound is harder for me to learn.
"H" is icy! I did not know letters could be cold. But I guess they can be, since some are warm or even hot. "H" is cold and dry. I sounds like something clattering far away, like a xylophone of wood. It is a hard, metallic letter and tastes a little bit oily, and a little bitter. At first I did not think I would like it very much. But it smells very fresh, almost like a eucalyptus tree, and it is a very handsome sort of letter.

(Sigh.) I WANT TO LEARN FASTER!

Amethyst's Journal

I have been so busy lately, I don't have much time to write myself, but I try to write something for Aramis when he wants it. Aramis has finally made his long-awaited visit to the berry patch, and it is proving to be quite yummy. I am so sorry I did not get him here sooner, but work takes up so much time. I a, glad when lots of people visit and keep Aramis company while I am away.

Aramis' Journal

Finally, I am in the berry patch! I like the berry patch. Berries are so good!! I wish I could be here all the time. You know, I think I felt that way about my shamrocks and my flowers, too. Isn't that funny? Do you think that maybe wherever you are right now always seems like the nicest place you can be while you're there???

Is "I" the selfish letter? It doesn't need to be! "I" can like to share, too! It is sweet and spicy-sour, how it tastes and how it smells. Amethyst says tamarind sauce tastes this way. And it is soft-bright, and wiggly, but smooth...if corduroy were made of porcelaine, that's how it would feel. It sounds hissy and hot, like a little fire.

This is the berry patch.

Aramis' Journal

I don't know much about "J" and "K" just yet. "J" tastes like cotton candy and is mushy in my hands, but it comes back to shape--it doesn't melt like cotton candy. It is slobbery in my mouth, and that's how it sounds--like a spitty wind instrument! But it is a pretty, dreamy color.

"K" is much stronger. It is stiff and hard, and feels as if it is covered with shiny satin. It is dry and cakey in my mouth, and doesn't taste very good at all. >:p It is very bright and nice-looking, but it is formal. You can't get too close to "K". "K" sounds sort of stern, like a snare drum that means business. It smells like an old house.

I am getting bored. I want more letters to learn. I want to read my own stories and write e-mails to people!!! But it takes a long time to learn the letters, and a long time for Amethyst to make them. She just made three new letters--"L", "M", and "N", but I have not had time to learn them yet. Once I learn them, I will be halfway done!

P.S. Ray wrote to say, "Happy Canada Day!" We are going to have a day here soon, too. It is called Independence Day. Amethyst says she will show me fireworks. I wonder what those are?

Here are Aramis' letter blocks, up to K.

July 4, 1998

Aramis' Journal

Lots of exciting things happened this past week. First, I had my first Independence Day. This is the birthday of the U.S.A., which is where I live. I didn't know countries had birthdays, but Amethyst says they do. Anyhow, they like to celebrate their birthdays with fireworks I guess, because we saw lots of them! It was really neat. I like fire a lot, but fireworks are even prettier.

I LOVE FIREWORKS!!!! :)

Aramis' Journal

"L" is a jelly-sort of letter, all wiggly and wobbly in my mouth. In fact, it's a lot like green jello! It feels smooth, and cold, and mushy-munchy, just like jello, but has a pebbly feel, too. It tastes much wetter and juicier than jello though--more like my patch of shamrocks. It sounds like a deep, big, bubbling of water made by a whale. It looks soft and fuzzy, and smells a little wet and slightly sweet.

"M" is a tight, humming sort of letter. It feels hard and strong and a little nubby all over, like a hard old couch. It tastes bready but spicy, and feels a little warm. It hums a little like a bee, but much deeper. I like the smell of it--musky but not too strong. It looks like a sort of sober letter.

"N" is just like gold. It feels completely smooth and a little warm, like gold someone has been wearing. It sounds like the peal of a great bell. It is an upright letter, with a smooth, almost creamy taste but an oddly hot, metallic smell. What a nice letter. Right now it is shining at me.

"O" is like a big soft, thick bubble. It bounces in my mouth and smells earthy and wet. It has a sort of wet, earthy flavor, too, which Amethyst likes, but I like sweet things better. It is a kind of laughing letter, and it sounds a little like an oboe. It looks ocean-cool and a little frosty.

"P" has a salty flavor and a hot, pepperminty smell. It crunches, and sounds crunchy, too. It looks bold and straightforward, and it feels a little rough, like a bath towel. It's wet like a bathtowel, too.

Amethyst's Journal

Happy Birthday, U.S.A.!

Here in the berry patch, Aramis is having an extended Independence Day celebration, on account of his fascination with fireworks. :) Aramis wants them to stay until August, when he moves to a new place.

August 15, 1998

Amethyst's Journal

It has been very hot this month, so Aramis moved to a cool bubble home in the sea. He can't keep his fireworks with him down here, but he is enjoying watching the fish swim by and the sun sparkling down through the water.

This is the water, as seen from Aramis' bubble.

Aramis' Journal

I like my bubble in the sea. It is so much cooler down here than on land. The berries were so nice and sweet, but they were beginning to dry up in the sun, so we had to make them into jam and jelly. I am eating jelly sandwiches down here and they are yummy. :q

I don't know what to make of "Q"! It smells sweet but tastes medicine-y. If you push it, it bounces like a rubber ball, and sounds a little flat and squawky. I think maybe it feels a little jealous because it can't make a sound without the "U". It is an interesting pink color, like clouds as the sun is going down. I am happy that I have learned so many letters. I think I will be able to read by winter.

I like "R". It is warm and furry and a little mossy. It smells dusty and a little sweet, and tastes brown and moist. It is so rusty and nice and greeny that if I sleep under it, it reminds my of a quiet tree in the forest. "R" purrs like a sleepy old cat.

Wow! What a letter "S" is! It is so red and spicy and hot. It feels pebbly and smooth, and it humms a little, but sometimes it hisses and spits like a frying pan. It has such a rich color. It smells very tingly and spicy-hot.

Aramis' Journal

It is fall, and we just celebrated Thanksgiving. I love vegetables, and Amethyst made bunches and bunches of them for us to eat, plus apple pie. Sometimes I feel sad when Amethyst eats turkey. I know she doesn't eat it at the same time as we have dinner, so it won't upset me. Oh well. She is so good to me, I guess it shouldn't bother me when she eats meat.

These are some of my favorite vegetables. Don't they look good?

"U" is juicy and tart. It makes my mouth squish in when I say it, and it sounds ocean-y, like the sounds I heard in my bubble by the sea. Sea animals use the sound of "U" a lot, I think. It feels stretchy and flexy, like a big, smooth rubber band. It does not move like other letters, but sort of rolls and oozes. Can a letter ooze?

November 30, 1998

Amethyst's Journal

Aramis and I had a very happy Thanksgiving, even though I had to eat my turkey later that night to avoid upsetting his vegetarian tastes. It has been cold and stormy around here lately, and Aramis was afraid at first. But I started to tell him about the Christmas story, and soon he was so excited he forgot to be afraid. Today was the first day of Advent, and Aramis is all excited about the candles in church. I wish we had an advent wreath at home for him. Oh well, maybe next year.

November 30, 1998

Aramis' Journal "T" is salty, tangy, and crisp. It reminds me of my bubble in the sea, where I spent the hot part of the summer. It smells like a juicy, watery breeze, and taps like a drop of water. Not like a leaky faucet, but like a nice-sounding drop. It is very smooth, but has little ripples.

"V" is so dry compared to "T" and "U"! It hums and buzzes, and has a gold sort of taste, like "N". It is warmer than "U" but cooler than "T", and smells old-fashioned and a little bit musky.

I am so proud of Aramis! he has finall learned all of his letters. Because dragons can know a letter inside out just from experiencing it, Aramis will be able to begin sounding words out right away, without needing to separately learn the "sounds" that go with the letters. All he needs now is to begin reading a lot so he will learn his spelling. (it is very easy for dragons, once the letters are in their minds.)
I do not know what to get Aramis for Christmas. He is such a good little boy he doesn't beg or even ask for anything, but I would really like to get him something he would like.

Aramis' Journal
Amethyst is teaching me to read. The first thing I must learn is the Alphabet. That is all the little letters than make sounds and words. Now I have learned "A", "B", "C", "D","E", "F", "G", "H", "I", "J", "K", "L", "M", "N", "O", "P", "Q", "R", "S", and "T", "U", "V"--and Yeah, the last ones--"W", "X", "Y", and "Z"!

"W" is one of the nicest letters I have ever met. Its voice is soft and bubbles very quietly. It smells sweet, like the wisteria flowers Amethyst brought home one time, and it looks like them, too--soft and hazy and purple-y. It is smooth as petals.

"X" is hard and angular. It smells strong and somewhat bitter, a tannin sort of smell. Its voice clicks harshly and it seems impatient, always moving and squiggling, never content even with its color--it has to change, in vague ripples, all the time. I wonder how "W" puts up with it? I guess "W" is so peaceful and flowery and even-tempered it doesn't mind.

Most letters show their personality right away, but "Y" is very subtle. It is quiet for a long time, just helping other letters, when suddenly it will make a sound of its own--sometimes high-pitched, sometimes slurred and low. It has a faintly sweet but a little earthy taste and smell. Amethyst and I can't decide whether it reminds us more of banana or of lotus seed. It really is like neither one, but this is the best we can do!

But the oddest one of all is last, "Z". It likes to stand out, with an off-key hum and a bright, colorful look. "Z" likes all colors and no colors, it is noisy but quiet, and smells and tastes a little metallic. You know, I think I really like all the letters, if nothing else because they are all so different.

Do you have e-mail? If you do, would you write to me? I know I will be able to read a whole letter soon! Until then, Amethyst will read to me.

Here are the rest of Aramis' Alphabet blocks.

Amethyst's Journal
I have been explaining to Aramis about Christmas. He is very excited about the "birthday party" we are going to celebrate. Aramis has never had a birthday of his own yet, so now he thinks that when you have a birthday, you give presents to other people. Aramis wants to be able to write his name on our Christmas cards, so we hurried through the rest of the letters. I wish I could afford to get Aramis more Christmas gifts. I know he never asks for anything, but he is such a good little dragon I wish I could give him more.

December 14, 1998

Aramis' Journal
In a few weeks, we are going to celebrate a special birthday! It is called Christmas. Remember when Amethyst told me about that person who loves everyone, even dragons like us? Well, every year, we celebrate his birthday, and we get the presents! Isn't that strange? Amethyst says it is because He loves us so much it makes Him much happier to see us get things than for us to give Him anything. I think that is really neat. I think I would rather see Amethyst get something really nice than for her to give me something. I would be happy because she is happy. I wonder what I can give her?

Some of our dragon friends give presents for a whole bunch of days, and light a whole bunch of candles. We only have four candles, on Sundays, and one day for presents. I wondered why we are different. Amethyst says it is because different people love our Friend Who Loves Everyone in different ways. It is nice to have so many different people love you. No wonder he wants us all to be happy. :)

Aramis is visiting the snow for the first time. He did not know that Winter looked quite like this, since Los Angeles is so warm and sunny, and Berkeley was mostly just wet. For an hour he just watched the snowflakes; Then, he just listened. Now he will try to write about it, using his newfound knowledge of letters.

That was harder than it looked! I will let Amethyst write again for a while. But now I think I can read your e-mails by myself! Please send some!

We put up Christmas lights, but Aramis does not want a tree. He does not like to cut down a real one, and he says the artificial ones smell funny. I am not going to argue with him. The lights are enough for me. I am a little sad because I could not get a very big present for Aramis this year. He never asks for anything, but I can tell he would really like a new toy. <:-| At least he will have a little something to unwrap Christmas morning.

Wow! At the last minute, Uncle Andy saved Christmas. When we came back from Mass this morning, guess what was running around on the living room floor? Aramis is not even saying one word this morning, just looking at it with big, big eyes. My present seemed really tiny beside a whole new train, so I will save it for later. Maybe by the time his birthday comes around, he will be able to notice other things!!!

I was really happy with Aramis' Christmas present to me. When I woke up this morning, the table was full of all kinds of food. Aramis made "breakfast" for me! :)
