Waiting
By Tom Savage
Natalie ran through the forest without a care in the world. She loved forests, she loved nature, she loved it so much that she was oblivious to all of the danger.
She slowed down and began to walk, all the while enjoying the cool air and the living sights. Her school life was hectic, and coupled with the need to find a job at the end of the term she has had more stress than she could take.
Natalie gasped as she saw a single hummingbird floating a few feet ahead of her. She was in awe as she watched it float effortlessly over a flower. She had to get a closer look. She took two carefull steps forward and stoped to
gaze upon the magnificent creature once more. She stayed silent, watching until she felt a weird sensation on the bottoms of her bare feet.
She looked down to see her ancles slip into the mud. "Quicksand!!!" she gasped as she tried to pull her feet free. It was however too late, the effort only made her sink deeper she
sank untill the mud was up to her calves, all the while remembering all of the horror stories she has ever heard about people dying in quicksand. Suddenly she felt something, it was solid earth, the quicksand pit was only a few feet deep. She was saved she thought, she had apparently lucked out, finding a very shallow pit.
She laughed silently, thinking it had been absurd for her to fear a moment ago. She smiled and went to lift her legs free. She grunted as her leg did not even move one inch. She tried again to the same event, she tried the other leg and it was just as firm. She frantically bent down and began to dig at her muddy resraints, but for every handfull of mud
she moved another filled in. She grasped her knee and pulled with all her strength, but the mud held firm, holding onto her slender legs with an almost sort of
supernatural strength.
She quickly became tired and gave up. She then realized the full scope of the situation. Even though this quicksand was shallow and she need not worry about drowning, it had a death grip on her legs and would not let go no matter what she did. She then realised to her horror, that she shared the same fate as
those who sank. She was doomed to die of either starvation of thirst, stuck to the spot in the middle of a forest. As she began to scream for help she decided that she no longer liked forests.
