the tarot is said to embody the religions of the ancient egypt, india, chaldea and persia. in the dark ages the christian church referred to them as 'the devil's books' and linking tarot to black magic and witchcraft
It is commonly believed that the Tarot was first created in Egypt for 4000 years ago. Others sais they have found proof that the first Tarot was used in Fez in Morocco 1 200 B.C. That might explain the presence of the Tarot mysteries in the Muslim world.
The Tarot came to the western world in 1392. It was said that the artist Jacquemin Gringonneur painted a set for King Charles VI of France. The Tarot was very popular during the middle ages.
Alphonse Louis Constant, aka. Eliphas Lévi said in 1855: "The Tarot cards are the key to the exoteric tradiditon of the Jews" and that 'The Three of Life' were the 'primitive cource of Divine and human Tradiditon'. The word 'Tarot' might have developed from the word 'Torah' - the sacret texts of the Jewish religion.
In 1889, Gerad Encausse said that the Gypsies possessed a 'Bible of Bibles', a card game called Tarot and it containe the wisdom of all ancient peoples.
In it's deepest mystical meaning, the Tarot is the art or practice of assessing or divining the truths of 'chance' and 'meaning'. The dealing and shuffling of the cards symbolizes the 'chance' element and the interpretation of those cards, an attempt to discover the 'meaning' of life and consequently, ourselves.
