Longshot is not only not a mutant, he is also not a human; or from this planet. He was artificially created from Mojoworld. A scientist named Arize created his race of slaves for the enjoyment of their literally spineless masters. But since Arize was coerced into doing this, he also endowed them with genetic advantages in the hopes that they would turn on their masters. Longshot was given the abilities of superhuman agility and the power to alter probability in his favor (rather like Domino).
Longshot's race is very similar to human, but they have just three fingers and their bones are light and hollow, giving them the potential to be the most agile people in the world. Longshot was a stunt performer there. Of course, they were not very happy under Mojo's domain, so a rebel movement was born, and Longshot joined them. Other Mojoworld mutates that joined him were Quark and Demos.
Unluckily, Longshot was found and trapped, and his memory erased. He escaped to our reality, pursued by a bunch of demons, and met Rita Ricochet, an special effects film star who felt in love with him. Longshot used to be pretty naive, not understanding quite well people's feelings, so when she disappeared, he never thought that something was wrong. Rita had really been captured by Mojo's hordes and turned into Spiral -- creating a mixture of love and hate for the man -- and became his worst enemy.
Longshot returned to his land -- but again lost his memory -- and appeared in the X-Men's Danger Room, getting the group involved with Mojo. He teamed with the group for a long time, creating a major jealousy battle between Rogue and Dazzler until he decided to look for his lost memories while he was in Australia.
Little to nothing is known of him until he appears to Dazzler without memory (this time, during the Perilous Siege), begging for her help. He is heading a revolution in his world, but things are not working right. Alison looks for the X-Men and they all together vanquish Mojo by impaling him on a sword, beginning a new age in that dimension. A pregnant Dazzler and Longshot stay there, in care of the matters of the new government. Mojo's successor, Mojo II, was not an improvement, proving to be just as tyrannical and utilizing scientific technology to walk upright became very formidable.
