ALBUM:AQUALUNG
ARTIST:JETHRO TULL
YEAR OF RELEASE:1970
RATING:****

One of the earliest albums to feature songs that could be considered metal, it's only real competition being Led Zeppelin III and Black Sabbath, Aqualung still holds up well today. Widely regarded as Tull's masterpiece, Aqualung features much of what earned them their huge cult following:Heavy guitars, acoustic songs, intelligent lyrics and the flute of wildman singer Ian Anderson. Though not nearly as heavy as a lot of stuff today, tracks like "Hymn 43", "Locomotive Breath", "Aqualung", and others are still definately heavy, especially for the time period of their release. Though listed as an influence by bands ranging from Black Sabbath, to Iron Maiden, to Blind Guardian, to Overkill, Tull to this day doesn't get the respect they deserve. A few spins of Aqualung, however, will quickly convince anyone into hard rock/metal what a great band Tull really is. Highlights include "Aqualung", "Locomotive Breath", "Hymn 43", and "Wind Up", just to scratch the surface. My edition is the remastered edition released in the past few years and features 4 or so bonus tracks, enhancing it even further.
