ALBUM:BREATHE DEEP THE DARK
ARTIST:DESTINY'S END
YEAR OF RELEASE:1998
RATING:*** 1/2

This fine piece of speed metal marks the debut of Destiny's End. Consisting of former members of New Eden and underrated 80's thrashers Helstar, Destiny's End aren't doing anything new or groundbreaking, but what they are doing is putting out an excellent power/thrash metal hybrid. Breathe Deep the Dark is not going to change the face of metal, but it is an excellent, underrated disc that is way too often overlooked by metal fans. Featuring the high pitched(but not annoyingly so, like most power bands) yet unique sounding vocals of James Rivera(a love him or hate him singer apparently, of which I fall into the former category), and the excellent dual guitar attack of Perry Grayson and Dan DeLucie, Breathe Deep isn't lacking in either the musical or vocal areas. One of the most common gripes about the disc it that the music tends to be fast, with little slowdown, but personally, that's what I like about it. The songs are all mostly fast, true, but they're not clones of each other, and I personally would prefer a disc of all fast songs to a disc with mostly fast songs, and a couple of lame ballads(the typical power metal formula). Overall, if you like your power metal fast and heavy, with a bit of thrash mixed in(or if you're a Helstar fan), this disc should definately be given a chance. Highlights of the disc include the title cut, "Rebirth", and "The Fortress Unvanquishable". Return to the music page.
