ALBUM:KURT OF KOPPIGEN
ARTIST:EXCELSIS
YEAR OF RELEASE:1999
RATING:*** 1/2

Mid-paced power metal album from Switzerland. While not as speed oriented as a lot of power albums, it makes up for it with a heavier style and lower vocals. This sets it apart from a typical power metal album. Additionally, they do not use much orchestration, aside from some keyboards, but fortunately, the album is still quite enjoyable. The lower, rougher, vocals are much more enjoyable than the usual power metal high pitched vocalist, and the choruses have a suitably epic quality. This album is based on the Swiss book, "Kurt von Koppigen" and tells the story of a man who falls asleep in the woods of Koppigen, and dreams of times long past, and of a hero named Kurt. This album is highly recommended to people who prefer slower music and/or rougher vocals than the typical power metal album. It is highlighted by tracks such as "Ambush in Langenthal", "The Wild Hunt or the Distant Sky", and "Before the Storm".
