ALBUM:TUNES OF WAR
ARTIST:GRAVE DIGGER
YEAR OF RELEASE:1997
RATING:*****
This album is one of my personal favorites. It tells the story of the Scottish fight for independence and freedom, from the 800's to the late 1700's, better than the usual fantasy based lyrics of most power bands. An excellent mix of songs, from the speedy, almost thrashy "William Wallace" to the emotional "Ballad of Mary(Queen of Scots)", to the doom stylings of "The Bruce" to the grandiose and powerful "Rebellion." With heavy guitars, good drumming, and Chris Boltendahl's rougher vocals, you've got one monster of a power metal disc. A great album from beginning to end, and one that belongs in the collection of anyone into power metal(that's heavy and thankfully NOT keyboard driven) or metal in general. Highlights include "Rebellion", "Cry For Freedom", and "Killing Time".
