ALBUM:WOLF
ARTIST:WOLF
YEAR OF RELEASE:2001
RATING:***

This disc is one that's gotten a lot of praise on one of the boards I read, so when The End records got it for $11, I had to pick it up. After hearing all the hype, I have to say I was a bit dissappointed. Don't get me wrong, it IS a good disc, just not the greatest thing since sliced bread, as some people seem to think(Hi, Alien!;-P). Music is good, although I doubt any of these guys are gonna be in the guitar/bass/drum god category or anything anytime soon. The other reviews I've ready are right, they do owe more than a little debt to Iron Maiden in their musical stylings. So if you like Maiden, you'll probably like this disc, especially if you wish Maiden was slightly heavier. However, there's one big snag-the vocals. This guy sounds like Joacim Cans of HammerFall(which probably just turned half the readers of this review against Wolf, oh well). The guy is pretty high and wimpy sounding, very similar tone to Cans as well. It's not a huge snag, even with a great singer my rating wouldn't really have been any higher, his vocals didn't bring my rating down or anything, but I would like a better singer. Overall, if you're a fan of Iron Maiden style music, and aren't opposed to the vocals, it's worth picking up if you don't have to pay too much for it. Highlights are the Eygptian themed "In the Eyes of the Sun"(which owes a fair debt to Maiden's "Powerslave"), "Electric Raga", and probably "The Parasite". Return to the music page.
