With the help of Caliban's tracking abilities, Callisto founded a band of mutants and led them into the abandoned tunnels beneath New York. They named themselves the Morlocks after the rulers of the Netherworld in H.G. Wells' The Time Machine. The members chose to live below the surface due to their inhuman appearance, and many became angry and bitter due to this forced lifestyle. Food and supplies were stolen from those above land. Since many Morlocks were sterile, they also kidnaped children from time to time. All Morlocks obeyed their leader much like in a street gang, and disputes were settled by hand-to-hand combat.
The first time the X-Men encountered the Morlocks was when Callisto kidnaped the Angel to be her mate. To save her friend, Storm challenged Callisto to a knife fight and won leadership of the Morlocks when she stabbed Callisto through the heart. The X-Men battled the group again much later when the Morlocks kidnaped the children from Power Pack. But it was during their third encounter that they teamed up to fight a common foe. . .the Marauders. Hired by Mr. Sinister, the Marauders set out to slaughter the entire Morlock population. During a battle that only few survived (one being Sarah), current X-members Shadowcat, Nightcrawler, and Colossus were gravely injured.
Most of the Morlocks that survived the Morlock Massacre remained in the tunnels to rebuild. With Storm's attention given to the X-Men, Callisto retained leadership temporarily until she was made beautiful by Masque. She promptly abandoned the Morlocks leaving Masque in charge. After his death, the group was without leadership until Mikhail Rasputin came forth to take Masque's place. Despite the X-Men's intervention, Mikhail managed to kill all of the Morlocks by flooding the tunnels.
