It was revealed after the fact that Mikhail Rasputin's genocide of the Morlocks was merely a cover for his real plan. He teleported the Morlocks to an alternate dimension called "The Hill" at the request of the Dark Beast, creator of the original Morlocks. In this environment, time passed at a rapid rate allowing the Morlocks to breed. With each generation, the Morlocks (now called Gene Nationals) grew stronger and more bitter at human society. Marrow's attack on a subway car the night Storm ripped out her heart was one of Gene Nation's strikes at humankind.

Months after her defeat of Marrow, Storm found herself teleported to "The Hill" by Mikhail. In an effort to halt her streak of ineffectiveness as leader of the Morlocks, she forced Mikhail to bring all of Gene Nation back to Storm's dimension. After apparently killing Mikhail, Storm and the X-Men transported Gene Nation to a desolate village in Africa so that they might create a community above land. Since then, a group of soldiers called Humanity's Last Stand attacked the settlement. Both the X-Men and Havok's Brotherhood arrived to help fend off the attack, but the population of Gene Nation was reduced from hundreds to dozens. During the battle, the Dark Beast apparently killed all of the human attackers but it was revealed that he merely teleported them all to his laboratory for genetic testing. Following the massacre, Storm conceded leadership of the group to one of its members, D'Gard, as her commitment to the X-Men kept her from her duties in Africa.

Recently, a second faction of Gene Nation has appeared. Let by the Dark Beast, the group (consisting of several new characters) kidnapped the students of Generation X for genetic testing, but were beaten and presumably all killed with the help of Nathan Summers aka X-Man.
