[Hope and Fear] [SEASON FOUR]

SEASON FOUR

Season four was a mixed bag if there ever was one. It had wonderful episodes ("Message in a Bottle", "The Omega Directive"), but was off set by truely horrible ones ("Mortal Coil", "Retrospect"). I think overall this season was one of the best for Voyager, but next season could be far better. First off Seven of Nine was used WAY to much. I like her, but I do miss characters like Tuvok, Chakotay, and yes even Neelix. What they need to do is incorporate her into the show, without Seven stealing it. Second I miss Kes, sickbay seems a litte too empty with just the Doctor and I hope the rumors of her return are true. Lastly this season just seemed really short. I wish Paramount had more studios to go around for "Prime Directive" so they could keep Voyager going a little longer. Well anyway, this season ended on a long streak of good episodes and hopefully the streak will last into the 5th season.

"Hope and Fear"

"Hope and Fear" turned out far better than I expected. It makes four good Voyagers in a row! It starts out with Voyager giving passage to an alien (Arturius) that has great language skills. He quickly decodes Starfleet's message and informs Captain Janeway that a ship is waiting for them less than ten light-years from their current location. Voyager arrives to find the USS Dauntless. The Dauntless uses quantom slipstream technology to cross the galaxy in only three months (that could fit within the summer break - maybe thats how Voyager and DS9 will stay at the same time if Voyager were to return). Anyway the Captain and 7 of 9 are suspicous and find alien technology on the Dauntless. It turns out that Arturius's species was assimilated shortly after Voyager defeated Species 8472. Arturius is out for revenge on the crew for saving the Borg (and the galaxy I might add, but thats a different episode) and almost gets it. Voyager saves the Captain and 7 before the reach Borg space, and even gain 300 light-years before the quantom slipstream collapses. "Hope and Fear" was no "Scorpion, Part I", but was an okay season finale. I never like episodes split over summer though. "Hope and Fear" had a good plot, decent acting, but lacked feeling. I give it a 7 out of 10.

"One"

Yet another strong Voyager this week (three in a row, next week's looks good too). "One" was virtually only a 7of 9 episode, but had some substantial character development (which she needs). Here is an overview of the episode: It begins with Voyager encountering a vast (but skinny) nebula filled with fatal radiation. Voyager doesn't realize it and enters, Harry nearly dies (big surprise) and another Ensign bit the dust. So Janeway and crew enter stasis, leaving only 7 and the Doc (who are immune) in command. The bio-gel packs then begin to mutate and disrupt everything and the Doc's mobile emitter goes out as well, confining him to Sickbay. 7 is forced to command Voyager by herself but begins to halucinate and shuts down life support to keep the ship going. In the end the crew awakes in time to save her and continue on their way. Now for my thoughts on "One". I liked this episode overall. It didn't contain much for special effects, and was kind of confusing at times (as all halucination episodes are), but was well written and acted fairly well. I give this episode a 7 out of 10.

"Demon"

Another very strong Voyager this week. "Demon" displayed a fairly original plot, great special effects, and decent acting. The plot begins as Voyager is in grey mode, or a very low power state. Seven is able to locate a Duetrium rich planet, but it is a Y Class (also known as "Demon" Class) world. Harry (a.k.a. Ensign death wish) and Tom take a shuttle to collect some Duetrium, but end up copied by a duetrium/biological alien. The copies are unaware of the event and return to Voyager only to find its air toxic. Voyager begins to sink in a vast pool of the creature (the ship had landed), but is saved when Janeway cuts a deal with the aliens. Now for my thoughts on "Demon". Overall this plot was a winner and was pretty original (although the thumb copy was totally off of the TNG episode with Crusher's hand being copied). I was glad to see Voyager land this season (if anyone has a clip please send it to me, I would be appreciate it greatly), and I liked seeing the space suits again as well. Everyone acted pretty well this week, Garret Wang is not great but not bad either, and Torres was back finally. I give "Demon" an 8 out of 10.

"Living Witness"

"Living Witness" started out on what seemed to be an original premise, the Doctor materializes in an alien museum that portrays Voyager as a bunch of savages. Unfortunatly it soon began to remind me of all the alternate reality episodes from the Original series and Deep Space 9, the TNG episode where Dr. Crusher was held captive in a cavern and the "aliens of the week" tried to blow up the Enterprise from within, and not to mention last year's Voyager with the dinosaur scientist. This episode simply replays an old plot in a new setting. I did like the redo of the Voyager set, the way everything was shown slightly wrong onboard, and I think that the real Voyager would have been better off leaving 7of9 and her Borg drones the way the evil Voyager did. I was also happy to see Seven have the smallest part in the episode (well other than Torres - she is on maternity leave), I am getting a little sick of her saving the day. Pretty good acting - the normal cast was all holographic, so some leway can be given. Overall I give this episode a 7 out of 10.
