As January 1, 2000 approaches millennialist cults are becoming even more enthusiastic in their preparations for " the end world". So persistent are these groups, world governments are taking notice. During the first week of 1999 a Denver based cult called Concerned Christians caught the attention of the Israeli government. The group allegedly planned to wreak havoc in an effort to hasten the 2nd coming of Christ. The Isreali government heard their plans and promptly kicked the 11 member group out of their country. The Concerned Christians are not alone. According to a 1997 Associated Press Poll, close to 25% of adult Christian Americans believe Christ will return in their lifetimes and the Apocalypse is close. These Christians read the signs in the books of Daniel and Revelation They see the changes in climate. Witness false prophets rising and falling. They hear of wars and rumors of wars. Many of these people soon become obessed and join cults fixated on the end of our world. The Millennium Watch Institute has more than 1,200 cults in their database. This number is expected to multiply as more and more people seek safety from "the impending doom". These groups reject society and enter a world of their own rules. Theses cults are usually based in mystery and stealth with only a selective few. Many groups stop short at nothing to hasten the second coming of the Messiah. Here is a brief list and summary of some of the millennialist cults: Sukyo Mahikari A Japanese cult rumored by former members to spread a neo-Nazi, anti-Semitic message. The group is established as a charitable organization in England. The group prophesies that mankind will be destroyed in the year 2000 by a "baptism by fire." Although the group denies it this prophecy sounds very much like that of the Aum Shinrikyo prediction. Aum Shinrikyo is the cult involved in the deadly sarin gas attack in Tokyo. Church of the Final Testament Founded by former Russian police sergeant Sergei Torop. Torop was relieved from duty after numerous "religious visions". In the early 1990's he took the name Vissarion and formed group called the Vissarionites. The group estimated to be the largest in Russia, has a special interest in former Communist Party members and rejects prohibitions on suicide. Vissarion claims to be Jesus Christ and is currently building a "City of the Sun" on Siberia's Mount Sukhaya. Russian politicans fear the group may commit mass suicide as the year 2000 approaches. Center of Study of Extraterrestrial intelligence The Center is based in Asheville N.C. and is ran by Dr. Steven M. Greer, an emergency-room physician. This group of UFO enthusiast go out into the wilderness and encourage UFOs to land using a combination of lights and positive thinking. (no word yet on whether this works or not). The group feels that Extraterrestrials wish to share their technology with us but are scared away by our hostile government. Greer also alleges that "black ops" programs have physically attacked flying disks. The House of Yahweh The House of Yahweh prophesies that the world will meet it's doom if it does not universally obey the laws of Yahweh, and rebuild the temple in Jerusalem beside the Dome of the Rock. The 3000 members also believe their leader Hawkins will announce the second coming of Christ and then be slain by Satan. Concerned Christians This is the extremist cult mentioned in the intro. Those associated with the cult claim their leader Monte Kim Miller, believes he is the last prophet before Armageddon. The group teaches that America is Satan. Miller prophesies that he will die in Jerusalem during the month of December 1999. Of course he will rise from the dead in three days. Elohim City In this town built like a fortress lives 100 inhabitants who follow former Mennonite preacher Robert Millar. Millar sees a white Christian nation in North America, he trains his followers to prepare for an Asiatic invasion. Millar is fueled by fundamentalist Christianity, KKK-style racism and Astrology. He believes that Christ has been revealing himself for the last two millennia. He preaches that soon after the year 2000 a series of natural disasters will strike cleansing the earth of the wicked. Convicted bomber Timothy McVeigh phoned friends of his in Elohim City before the bomb blast. These are just the few among the many. |
