Rei

She started training for EVA since the E-project was in its early stages. So, she transferred to the school when she was in her 7th grade. 1 week before Shinji arrives at NERV she was wounded by the accident during a boot-up experiment, so at the beginning of the story, she was hospitalized. It is suspected that the cause of the accident is that her mind was not stable enough to control Evangelion Unit 0.

Shinji

Shinji is the son of Gendoh Ikari, the creator of the Evas and NERV. He is the "third child" and commands Eva Unit 0:1. Previously having lived with his uncle as his father went to work for NERV, Shinji is forced to pilot the Eva, being one of the only children posessing this amazing ability. Some would think this an enjoyable experience for Shinji, but he only does his work because it is needed to be done. He develops a strong disliking for his father and blames him for the fact that he has to be thrust into this new, painful life without any choice.

Asuka

Also known as the second children. She is also 14 years old and she pilots Eva-02. Asuka comes from Germany but 1/4 of her is Japanese. Unlike Rei, she is bright, motional and active but sometimes, she is too self-confident. At first, Asuka doesn't like Shinji-kun and laterly she seems to like him very much and that's when classmates start calling them as a couple.

Misato

Misato Katsuragi is a 29 year old member of NERV. Her main duties at NERV are to run the Evangelion operations and instructions when Gendo Ikari, the creator of them, is absent in such a situation. In all battle situations she remains calm at first, following what she knows in her mind. However, many times battle situations put the Evangelions as the weaker foe and in those Misato resorts to what she truly feels necessary to overcome the foe. Often times she panics at first, and then becomes more calm after reassurance that victory will be accomplished. Aside from her NERV duties, Misato also offered to be the guardian of Shinji, who decides, once coming to NERV, not to live by himself but instead in the company of others. Neglected by his father, Misato takes him in as a sort of foster son.
