HAN AND LEIA
An interpretation by Ros.
In the cross fire riddling the detention centre they argued. In the garbage masher they fought, knew fear, and found some rapport. In the corridors of the galaxy's worst weapon they insulted each other and grudgingly admitted that the other had some good points. In the skies above they joined forces to fight for a common cause.
On the ice world of Hoth they fought each other and their feelings. They shared their first kiss in the centre of an asteriod. They were both tortured in Cloud City. He knew jealousy for the first time and she knew love. He was taken from her here and she fought for his return.
In a crime lord's palace they felt love, hope, despair and horror. In the desert there was freedom; on a forest moon there was capture. he admitted his feelings in the middle of a battle zine and knew much pain when she was wounded. Together they helped win a war and in doing so, stopped the wars within themselves. They accepted their feelings could not be denied and realised that the future, no matter what it was, would be a path that they travelled together.
"Wonderful girl! Either I'm going to kill her or I'm beginning to like her!"
"I love you." The words came tumbling out, expressing how she'd felt inside for such a long time. Her eyes met his, hoping, yearning for the answer she so desperately wanted to hear. "I know." NO! This was not the answer she'd wished for. But as she continued to look into his eyes, somehow she knew how he felt - she'd always known.
"You've got to look after the Princess." Han tried to calm both the distraught Wookiee and himself. He looked down at the beautiful woman standing between him and Chewie. His heart felt like it was being crushed. No matter what happened, he knew he would always love this woman. She was a part of him. Their eyes locked and almost unbidden he found himself kissing her once again. This time was different though. There mightn't be another chance for them. As he was pulled away the anguish and love in her eyes made him choke. How would he cope if he never looked into those lovely eyes again? And how would it affect her if he didn't return? There had been so much pain in her life and he would never want to add to it.
~I love you.~ He continued to stare into her face. He knew what he wanted to say. He wanted to take her into his arms and love her from now until eternity. But waht if this was eternity? Could he live with himself if he told her how he felt and then left her forever? Her eyes begging him to answer her truthfully but if he died the trugh would only hurt her. Love expressed and then torn away was the most painful wound of all. Seconds ticked by. Time was short but what to do? Her eyes continued to plead with him. 'Okay then,' he decided. 'The truth'.
~I know.~ There, that was the truth and if he didn't make it she could get through it with hate. 'And if I make it then nothing will come between us.' Her eyes, those deep soulful eyes, eyes now more confused and anguished than ever were the last thing he saw as the gas swirled around him. 'I love you Leia!'
"Hey, what's going on?" She started. Han advanced towards her,
rattling the planks on the boardwalk.
"Nothing." How could she tell the man she loved that the man who
tortured him and encased him in carbonite was her father?
"You can tell me." If only he knew....
"Just leave me alone." She didn't have the words to explain all
this to him.
"Could you tell Luke? Is that who you could tell?!"
She turned away. The stupid man was jealous! She couldn't cope
with all of this at once. Han took another step towards her.
"I'm sorry." He was sorry. He had no need to be sorry.
"Hold me." In his arms things didn't seem so scary. In his arms
she felt like she was home.
The Death Star exploded in a huge, gaseous blast. One moment it was there hanging over them like some malevolent demon and the next a man-made supernova destroyed its threat. Han's head snapped up as cheers went through the crowd. He smiled, then looked down at the lovely but wounded woman beside him. A look of concern crossed his face when his eyes met hers. Only a few moments before he thought his world was ending when she was hurt and then suddenly things were okay and he'd spoken the words he never thought he'd say to anyone. He knew how she felt - maybe. In Cloud City he was sure but now things were different. Luke! During all the months he was trapped Luke would have been Leia's constant compainion. Who knew what could have been going on. True, she was still close to him but something had changed and he knew it had something to do with Luke. The Luke who had gone to the Death Star to confront Vader and the Emperor. A Death Star that had just exploded.
"I'm sure Luke wasn't on that thing when it blew." He knew he was
probably wrong but he would do anything to make her hope. She gave
him a half smile.
"He wasn't. I can feel it." Han almost choked. If Leia could
tell Luke was still alive then they were very close.
"You love him." He gave a wry smile. "Don't you?" He had to
know.
"Well, yes!" She seemed surprised at his question as if to say
'It's obvious, isn't it?'
"Okay." He had to swallow his pain and make it appear that he
could cope with losing her. "When he gets back I won't get in your
way." There would be no point. Her love for Luke was so clear to
him now he couldn't believe he'd missed it. But she was saying
something. He struggled to concentrate.
"What?!" Her voice held so much surprise. "It's not like that at
all." Han's heart stopped. "He's my brother." His heart started
again, beating hard against his chest making it hard to breathe.
Her brother! No wonder they were so close. He locked eyes with
her and watched her smile. Oh, the love and joy he felt now. She
was free. She could be his. He kissed her, hard. No one would
ever separate them now.
Alone they knew much misery and fear but togethery they knew that no obstacle was too great for them to overcone. This love was not instant or easy to find. There was no immediate recognition, no love at first sight. From the moment they met it was more a clash of wills than a meeting of souls.
To him she was just a rich girl who knew nothing about having to
fight for your life and to her, he was an arrogant rogue who had
never in his whole life thought of someone else before himself.
Despite this they were still drawn to each other, an attraction
that both tried to deny. However, no matter how they denied their
feelings, their lives were so closely connected that there really
could be no other outcome to this relationship.
Obi-Wan's secret smile when Han stated that there was no supreme
being controlling his destiny is testimony to this. Han and Leia
were fated to be together from the moment they began an argument
across the blaster fire in the Death Star detention centre.
Like all good romances the path of true love didn't run smooth for Han and Leia. Not only were their prejudices blindking them to their compatability but the fear and death surrounding them created an atmosphere where love found it difficult to flourish. And of course there was Luke. Leia could not understand how she could be in love with two men at once; two very different men who were both connected to her somehow.
Han was also confused. Luke was the nearest thing he had to a brother but he was also the biggest threat to Han winning Leia's heart. Nothing though was going to stop them finding love and holding on to it with all their might. Not war, not unkown brothers, not special powers, not evil fathers and not galactiv war. Together, Han and Leia learnt that war was no obstacle to happiness, that peace and joy can be found in the midst of pain and sadness, that destiny is a very powerful force and that love really can conquer all.
