Highlander: The Raven: 'Bloodlines'

Nick goes on the trail of an Immortal killer who is a friend of Amanda's.

This was bound to happen sooner or later. After all, Amanda must know dozens of the more unsavoury Immortals. At least MacLeod's chums were actually quite nice. The storyline here is pretty basic: centuries-old grudge continues through an Immortal seeking revenge for the death of his son. Admittedly, this isn't likely to happen that often among Immortals (they don't usually have children, as being immortal prohibits this). What brings the episode up above its contemporaries is the stylish way in which it is handled. The slow motion works to good effect, and it's shot in a sweeping camera style that adds to the atmosphere. But it still doesn't make it more than an average episode of The Raven.

There are several things that puzzle me about Bloodlines. Firstly, how come Nick is acting as a cop when he turned in his badge? And secondly, shouldn't Amanda make slightly more effort to redeem her friend to stop him being killed by Nick? She doesn't even seem to concerned at the end of the episode.

The ending is also much too convenient. That glass could fall as effectively as it does is very difficult to swallow. Mind you, it does pave the way for an important question: will Nick now be carrying a sword as well as a gun? Of course, if he did, he'd have to train up pretty damn well to take on a bunch of people who've had centuries more time to practice than Nick has. And he'll need a longer coat. Lastly, this is the first time in The Raven that it's been seen what happens when a mortal kills an Immortal, which gives the episode some curiosity value at least.
