Highlander: The Raven: 'Immunity'

When a woman is arrested for an assassination, she immediately claims diplomatic immunity. It is up to Nick (with Amanda's help) to obtain documents that will enable her conviction. However, Amanda has her own problems…

Now, this is an odd episode. It's got a lot going for it, but it also lets itself down in key areas. Firstly, the way Amanda is dragged into the storyline is much too convenient and unlikely. Secondly, I don't know how the American justice system works, but on the basis that Nick actually sees a man being shot, and the woman who did it, surely diplomatic immunity can't be used to get you out of cold-blooded murder? Lastly, the final act end 'revelation' is really, really cheesy, especially after Nick's friend spends the episode coming across as a corrupt cop, which would add a new dimension to the supporting character that doesn't actually turn out to be what the writers had planned.

On the plus side, the Immortal who arrives to confront Amanda simply because she is next on his list and it will spoil his calculations if she isn't killed by him, is a great character. It's disappointing though that you never see the final confrontation between the pair. One question though: throughout the episode, this Immortal is called a lunatic, and although he does seem rather crazed later on, in the early part of the story, he's simply doing what Immortals are meant to do: hunting other down and taking their heads. Why is Amanda so surprised by his methods? After all, that's what 'The Game' is.

The snappy dialogue between Nick and Amanda is fantastic in Immunity, as the twosome pose as a married couple. If this interaction can be kept up, the series will constantly be a delight to watch to see them alone. It's also fun to see Nick's first warning about not interfering in the rules of Immortal combat, and the always welcome Patricia Gage as Lucy.

Overall then: fun, stylish as ever, but the concept needed a bit more fine-tuning.
