Magneto is the X-Mens oldest and most dangerous enemy, though his role has changed throughout the years. He was friends with Charles Xavier in the early days, before World War II and the death of his family, and shared in his dream of mutants and man living in harmony. After his family was killed, however, his hope turned to hate, his beliefs of man and mutant living side by side deteriorated with the racial killing in Germany, and he became one of the world foremost and deadly villains. Viewing himself as the savior of Mutantkind, Magneto turned his absolute mastery of magnetism toward the creation of a new world order in which mutants rule over a hapless mankind. Determined to defend the mutants he sees as his subjects from any and all threats, Magneto never hesitated to use the most ruthless means to achieve his noble ends.

He and the X-men clashed many times, as they again and again thwarted his attempts to master mankind, though he did succeed in causing the deaths of many when the X-Men were not present. Retribution finally came to him, however, and he was reduced to a mere babe. During this infancy, it was later discovered that Moira MacTaggert had toyed with his genetic structure, bringing out the best of his attributes. When he was accelerated forward in age, Charles Xavier told him that this was his chance, his chance to make up for his past deeds and try to redeem himself. He was put on trial for his previous crimes against humanity, and sentenced for them. He managed to escape, however as an attack was led on the courtroom, and Charles Xavier, in his seeming dying moments, asked Magnus to look after the New Mutants and help the X-Men. He agreed and became Headmaster to the New Mutants. He eventually migrated to the X-Men team on a partial basis, and indeed proved that he had a compassionate heart and soul, finding belief in Xaviers dream once again. Alas, this time of peace in his life was not to last. When the New Mutants disbanded and several of them had been killed, Magneto left the X-Mansion, feeling a failure. He disappeared for a long time following that, not surfacing again until Rogue found him in the Savage Land. He proved that he had changed when he saved her life, ending the battle between she and Ms. Marvel for life force. The two grew very close, but when Rogue was reunited with the X-Men, Magneto disappeared yet again.

This time when he resurfaced, he was much changed. Having discovered Moira's tampering with his DNA, and for other reasons as yet unknown, he reverted to his evil ways and launched an attack on Earth from his asteroid base. The X-men foiled his plot once again, and he escaped. The next time he appeared, he ripped the adamantium from Wolverines body, an act that was, in Charles Xaviers eyes, utterly iredeemable. He labotomized Magnus with his telepathic power, rendering him a vegetable. This act caused Colossus to lose his faith in Xavier, and he returned to Asteroid with Magnetos body, prepared to side with him. In the meantime, a mutant named Joseph, who closely resembles Magneto, and indeed, is believed to be Magneto by his X-men team mates, was discovered by Rogue and brought back to the Mansion. He seems to embody all the best attributes of Magnus, though some of his team mates are still mistustful of him. The last we saw of Magneto, he was still catatonic...until now. The villain recently reappeared, alive and mentally intact, if more evil than ever before. He orchestrated the trial of Gambit, unsettling the X-Men even further after the disappearance of Xavier. Now the question is..if Magneto is alive and whole, who is Joseph? And what bid for power will Magnus make, this time?

Strength level: Magneto can use his magnetic powers to increase his physical strength up through Class 100 (the ability to lift over 100 tons).
