Jakarta Post 18 May 2001 Jakarta Post 18 May 2001 JAKARTA (JP): Laskar Jihad Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah commander Ja'far Umar Thalib offered on Thursday to revoke his pretrial lawsuit against National Police chief Gen. Surojo Bimantoro if he is released from house arrest, Antara reported. "I will negotiate with the National Police chief to discuss the possibility of revoking my pretrial lawsuit against him. Therefore, I want this trial to be adjourned until tomorrow (Friday) morning," Ja'far told the South Jakarta District Court hearing, presided over by judge Syamsul Ali. Thursday's hearing was slated to hear a defense statement from the National Police chief, who had been accused by Ja'far of unlawfully instructing his arrest in Surabaya, East Java, earlier this month. Judge Syamsul, after postponing the hearing for 15 minutes, eventually agreed to adjourn the hearing until Friday. After the hearing, Ja'far said that he could only decide whether to revoke the lawsuit after meeting Bimantoro later in the day. A lawyer representing Ja'far, Eggy Sudjana, later said after accompanying Ja'far to the meeting with Bimantoro, that the police chief asked for a week to decide on the offer, Metro TV private television station reported.
