Netherlands envoy cuts short Maluku visit

AMBON, Maluku (JP): Netherlands Ambassador to Indonesia Baron Schelto van Heemstra cut short his working visit to Maluku on Tuesday due to escalating tension and security threats in the strife-torn area.

Speaking to the media in Ambon prior to his departure to Jakarta, Heemstra said he had to cancel visits to Tual, the capital of Southeast Maluku regency, and Banda in Central Maluku regency following an outburst of violence in Ambon which left eight people dead and 17 others injured on Sunday.

The envoy said the canceled visits were connected to the planned US$2 million humanitarian projects in Tual and Banda.

He also dismissed reports that the Netherlands government supported the resurrection of the South Maluku Republic separatist movement in Maluku.

"We do not tolerate or support such movements and we intend to uphold the unity of the Republic of Indonesia," he said.

In more violence on Tuesday, 31-year-old Jefri Kermite was found dead in his house in Gunung Nona, Ambon, at about 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. His body was found next to his injured 25-month-old son, Gin. Both victims had been stabbed.

Gin was rushed to Dr. Haulussy General Hospital, some two kilometers away.

At about 3 p.m. on Tuesday, armed attackers from the predominantly Muslim Kebon Cengkih area of Ambon attacked a housing complex in Halong Atas.

The attackers were pushed back by security forces, including personnel from the Joint Battalion II, the Marines and the Army 521/Brawijaya Infantry Battalion.

The two sided exchanged gunfire, though no fatalities were reported. The situation began to return to normal late on Tuesday afternoon. (49/edt
