Three killed in boat shootings in Ambon
Indonesian Observer Monday, May 14, 2001
JAKARTA (IO) – Three people were killed and two others injured when a
speed boat embarking from the Galala Village to the Baguala Sub-district
in Ambon was shot at at 14:30 local time yesterday.
An injured victim Wolly Mahue confirmed the incident occurred when the
boat cruising nearby the waters off of Rumahtiga Village had met another
boat going in the opposite direction.
“The boat quickly turned around and began chasing the boat that I was in.
Then a number of people wearing masks appeared and opened fire with guns,”
Wolly said at the Halussy medical clinic in Ambon.
After the unidentified persons launched the attack, their boat turned and
moved to the coast of the Rumahtiga village. The three casualties are
Polly Manuputty, 61, Magdalena Manuputty, 65, and Elsoes Kaya, 25.
Another injured victim was Ongen Manuputty, 26. Antara news agency
reported that local residents were shocked and dismayed by the incident.
Similar incidents often take place although there are some security posts
installed on the coast as well as floating posts. Mariners are also
deployed around the location 24 hours a day.
“We deeply regret the inability of the security people to prevent these
attacks. It is not until after the incident that the Navy launches a sea
patrol,” said Wolly.
Maluku Governor Saleh Latuconsina and Pattimura Military Commander
Brigadier General I Made Yasa could not be reached for comment.
