  Want to Help?

Positive action needed
Indonesian Observer Friday, May 19, 2001

We would like to suggest that the Police display a firm stance and
reject a tit-for-tat bargain plea submitted by lawyers of a self-
proclaimed commander of Jihad forces Jaffar Umar Thalib, now under house
arrest in Bogor.

Thalib was arrested by the Police over an accusation of inciting hatred
between Muslims and Christians in the Eastern part of Maluku. In addition
to that, he was also charged of murdering in cold blood, one of his own
fighters by condemning him to death by stoning. The victim had confessed
of raping a young girl while he was fighting the Muslim holy war in that
territory.

Thalib’s lawyer considered that his arrest was illegal and politically
motivated, and filed a lawsuit against Police Chief General Bimantoro at
a preliminary trial. He said that the lawsuit would be dropped if
Bimantoro terminated the house arrest status on Thalib.

Remembering the frantic search carried out by the government some time ago
for the instigators of the massive sectarian killings in Ambon and
neighboring islands in Maluku, which accounted for the death of several
thousand people, we would consider it an anti-climax if the Police showed
leniency toward Thalib and let him go.

He is one of the key people who can lift up the curtain which covers this
human drama; how life on these peaceful and beautiful islands has been
turned into an inferno, where up till today hundreds of refugees remain
stranded in deserted spots deprived of food, clean water, and medicine.

In the meantime it was quite interesting to follow an interview given by
Laskar commander Thalib to journalists on how he succeeded in implementing
the Islamic Law Syariat in Ambon, which was formally accepted by the
Muslim community on January 4, 2001.

It was quite astonishing how Thalib could get away doing things like this
which are in contravention of existing laws within the territory of the
Indonesian Republic.

We are of the opinion that Police Chief General Bimantoro has done the
right thing by placing him under arrest because this man is dangerous, and
has the potential of spreading chaos and disorder in this country.

Actually he is a social activist with ideas to improve society, but using
one of the most horrible punishments known to man, like stoning men and
women for sexual misconduct, chopping off the hands of thieves and other
kinds of punishment, is usually prohibited by enlightened societies.

But it is not impossible that his thinking may find a warm response with
the poor and desperate segment of society who see him as some kind of
savior, who can drive away the evils which are dickering society like
corruption, prostitution, and narcotics.

To attract the most fanatical elements, Thalib has disguised his agenda up
in an orthodox Muslim doctrine which instructs men to grow beards and to
prohibit girls from attending schools, whose place is confined to the
kitchen, the kind of life which the Talibans are setting up in Afghanistan.

Positive action is quite necessary to avert this disaster.
