Six killed in fresh violence in Ambon
Indonesian Observer Tuesday, May 22, 2001

JAKARTA (IO) — At least six people were killed in a fresh conflict in the
housing compound of Mardika and Soya Kecil in Maluku’s district of Ambon.

All the casualties resulted from the newly revived ethnic and religious
conflict in the area late Sunday.

Antara state news agency reported that all fatalities were the result of
wounds from sharp weapons.

It also disclosed that at least 17 additional people were seriously
injured after being attacked by a mob of people wearing TNI military
uniforms. The assailants were armed with bayonets, bombs, and rifles.

Witnesses said that the security police immediately arrived at the
location as the clash took place, but failed to stop the attack, and
none of the assailants were arrested.

Violence in the Ambon district has been a continual problem since January
1999. It escalated to a religious conflict and has claimed thousands of
lives and forced others to flee.

There have also been widespread calls for independence from Indonesia, as
one separatist group’s leaders were recently arrested for raising an
independence flag.

Maluku was placed under a civilian emergency status last year.
