The case of Vera - continued

Prison where suspect was about to be discharged

The investigation to the homicide of Vera in 2006 ended with the identification of a suspect. The suspect, however, was already serving a jail term for motorbike theft in the neighboring district town of Cilacap. In a initial interrogation he denied the crime, stating that he was staying in an Islamic boarding school in Jember, East Java, at that time. After a long process, Arus Pelangi accompanied the police to travel to Jember, East Java, in February, to check on the alibi of the suspect. There, it became clear that his alibi was false.

The arrest of the suspect

Back in Purwokerto, the police prepared for his arrest when he would be discharged from the Cilacap Prison. That happened on April 27, 2007. The moment he came out of the prison gate he was arrested again and taken to Purwokerto. During the trip, he initially still denied attacking Vera, but the overwhelming evidence presented by the police made him soon admit to the crime.

In Purwokerto, he was immediately taken to the crime scene at Jalan S. Parman to refresh his memory. A witness was also called upon to give his evidence. With his admission the way is now clear for a speedy trial. However, there is still some unclarity about the motive of his crime. Was it a hate crime against transgender people? Or was it just a quarrel gone out of hand? Hopefully the trial will shed more light to this question.

On June 23 the police turned the investigation report to the public prosecutor.

In September and October 2007 the trial took place. Gogi Yusanto (24 years) was indicted with the manslaughter of Vera alias Zainuddin. In fact, he should have been indicted with attempt to murder because there was strong evidence that he had the intention to kill.

Since he had earlier confessed to the crime and there were no witnesses to mitigate his case, he was eventually found guilty and sentenced to six years.

Now that this is over we can look back at the case of Vera; just one of the transgender people who became victim of violence. She almost became victim of negligence of law enforcement. Thanks to the efforts of Arus Pelangi and the LGBT communities in Purwokerto, we were able to overcome that. This case was not a case of homophobia because the perpetrator and the victim knew each other and at some point had a relationship, but it was still a crime.
