Bridget
Jones¡¦s Diary by Helen Fielding
Book
review 1...Part 1
Bridget Jones¡¦s Diary, the best selling novel, is a romantic comedy holds representation of women living in post feminist times and sets the women¡¦s movement back decades.
In this novel, the main character is a British woman who works for a large publishing firm. She is bound and determined to lose her budging figure, stopping smoking and find the man of her dreams. Bridget is smart, clumsy and dedicated to her quest. During the quest, Bridget hopes to entice Daniel Cleaver, the head of the publishing firm into a date and hopefully more. But Mark Darcy, a friend of the family, holds a secret that connects him to Bridget and Daniel.
I just cannot stop laughing when reading this novel. There is a lot of slapstick humor that make me laugh from the first five minutes to the ultimate end. For example, the hilarious description of Mark Darcy at the beginning ¡§ He turned around, revealing that what had seemed from the back like a harmless navy sweater was actually a V-neck diamond-pattern in shades of yellow and blue-as favoured by the more elderly of the nation¡¦s sports reporters.¡¨ It totally reflects how awful he looked when they first met.
Although the plot simply chronicles a year in the ordinary life of Bridget, this flaw is overshadowed by its hilarity. By amusingly presenting Bridget¡¦s obsession with matters such as weight and alcohol consumption, the author ¡§Fielding¡¨ brings the story to life, making the most ordinary story extraordinary.
