Hindko is known through northern Pakistan as a sweet,
melodic language. With it's use of three distinctive tones in a pitch
melody system similar to Panjabi, Hindko speakers often sound like they
are singing when outsiders overhear their conversations. This soft and
fluid language stands in contrast to the more staccato sounds of Urdu
or Pashto and is favored regionally for recitation of poetry and song.
