Magnitude 8.7 quake struck Sumatra anew, Tsunami alerts cause panic across Asia!!!

A strong earthquake off the coast of Indonesia Monday (March 28) triggered tsunami alerts across Asia, causing widespread panic in countries where over 270,000 people were killed by giant waves just three months ago.

The earthquake _ which occurred along the same tectonic fault line as the massive 9.0-magnitude temblor that caused the Dec. 26 disaster _ triggered panic in several Asian countries when governments issued warnings that another set of deadly waves might be about to hit.

The undersea quake measuring 8.7 on the Richter Scale prompted India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Thailand to join Indonesia in issuing tsunami alerts. Unconfirmed television reports said "tens of people" had been killed on the remote Indonesian island of Nias.

The US Geological Survey reported  at least 50 people killed, 100 injured and 300 houses Destroyed on Nias. Extensive damage on Simeulue. Felt in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and as far north as Bangkok, Thailand.

The earthquake occurred around 23h15 local time between the Sumatran cities if Padang and Medan.. The tremor continued for about 2 minutes. The epicenter was 2.3 NORTH 97.1 EAST, ie about 200 km off Sumatra mainland.

USA's NOAA has recommended that coastal populations within 1000 km from the epicenter be evacuated. Officials on Nias say that some people have been killed and dozens may be buried under rubble. Mass panic was caused by the earthquake with people running in the streets.

There is no evidence of a tsunami developing in the region. Thailand, Indonesia and Nicobar Island issued precautionary warnings. Thailand has cancelled its alert.

The BMG (Geophysical Data and Information Center) in Indonesia has not reported a tsunami on Nias Island which is located very close (a few ten km) to the epicenter
