WHAT IS JIU-JITSU

I do jiu-jitsu since 1994 in our club Judo/Jiu-jitsu Vereniging Terwinselen (graduation: black belt since april 1999).
Jiu-jitsu is a wonderful kind of sport to learn about and actually is a "school";
jiu-jitsu-do (the way you must follow to learn the fascinating aspects of jiu-jitsu).

You can see jiu-jitsu as;
* self defense,
* a kind of living,
* relief,
* social contact with others who have the same interest,
* science.

To me jiu-jitsu acts as all the five aspects:

self defense : feel yourself comfortable in uncertain situations
a kind of living: to develop your body and mind
relief: mental discharge of everyday's fuss
social contact: to enjoy the same hobby with others
 science: the "why" of doing jiu-jitsu

WHAT IS JIU-JITSU ?

Jiu-jitsu is a martial art with atemi-waza (blocking, punching, kicking), locking techniques, throws, choking techniques and self  defense techniques.
Actually jiu-jitsu-do contains elements from karate (atemi-waza), judo (throws, chokes, locks) en aikido (self defense techniques).
This martial art contains a huge variety of techniques, which you only can make your own if you are patient and have perseverance.

From the early start of the first lesson you will learn techniques you can practice.
Although this jiu-jitsu is a school where you can learn the techniques into  perfection by years of training and set in.

In the lessons a lot of attention is paid to get more flexibility.

To learn this all jiu-jitsu consists of different parts;
* falling techniques,
* kihon: technique training,
* kata: practice the techniques you learn in kihon in a predefined form,
* randori: the free fighting: practice the techniques in a free form

Jiu-jitsu is the forerunner of judo.
That's why both martial arts contain many techniques which are very similar. Otherwise jiu-jitsu has a lot of throws, locks, chokes which are not practiced in judo.

Jiu-jitsu has an examinationsystem, by which the jiu-jitsuka (the person who does jiu-jitsu) can earn higher degrees, dependent on the individual development.

lowest kyu degree: white belt,
yellow belt,
orange belt,
green belt,
blue belt,
highest kyu degree: brown belt,
lowest dan degree: black-1 belt, etc.....
The lower degrees (white to brown) are called kyu degrees (pupil degrees). The higher degrees (black-1 and higher) are called dan degrees (master degrees).

The personal motivation to do jiu-jitsu decides whether you will follow this "line" or not.
If jiu-jitsu is "your live" you will persue higher degrees than the person who does jiu-jitsu because of  relief.

Jiu-jitsu can be done by younger and older people.
