Problem 8.6 Statistical Inference August 26, 2002

Question:
Problem 8.6: A random sample of size 39 is taken from a population of 200 members. The sample mean is 66 and the sample standard deviation is 11. Construct a 96% confidence interval to estimate the population mean. What is the point estimate of the population mean?

A.:
Given:
n = 39
mean = 66
s = 11
96% confidence level = .04%

.04 / 2 = .02

P = .5000 - .02 = .480

Using z table: z = 2.05

Solution / Formula:

96% Confidence Interval:

62.75 <= m <= 69.24

Answer:

63 <= m <= 69

96% confident that the mean is in an interval between 63 and 69.
