Student Evaluations of Teaching
The following selected written comments were given by students in my most recently taught Formal Logic, Introduction to Ethics, Introduction to Logic, and Introduction to Philosophy. Enrollment included students from freshman to senior level. Students were asked "How was Ty at teaching? At conducting class overall? Anything else?"
Formal Logic
Good, Good. There is none greater, the Best.
good job. I learned pretty easily in here.
He seemed uncomfortable the first class session, as if he had never taught before. After that he appeared quit confident and definately has command of the material and the ability to teach it. I found it easier to understand the text after the lecture or class session that went over the reading.
Overall I was better able to understand the assigned readings after he explained it. I enjoyed the class. I always love a challenge and it certainly was one. Of all the classes I have taken (I am halfway through my junior year) this was one of the top 4 most difficult. I learned a lot. Thanks for a great class!
Ty was very well organized and very knowledgable.
The class went smoothly, the run of class was predictable & stable. The subject matter came across clearly & understandably.
I thought was a good class. very educational and I thought it was taught very well.
He did his best with some dry material. I believe he kept everything in line.
Needs to explain a bit more.
Introduction to Ethics
Your teaching skills are great. The best thing I liked about your class is that I could understand what you were talking about.
He was very organized and always encouraged us as students to participate in class. If there was anything that people didn't understand he would go over it as many times as necessary. He was good -- when it came to the discussions he was very neutral and never forced his beliefs or opinions on anyone -- he always let everyone say whatever they wanted without making (me) feel intimidated or "dumb"
I think Ty was good at teaching; the summaries prepared for each reading clarified any confusion and reinforced what was read. Class discussions were lead well and was nice to here all aspects of controversial issues. good job
Ty was good about getting everyone involved & letting them know if they had any questions where & when he was available.
He was a good teacher, he knows his material and subject matter, however he doesn't make eye contact offen & lost a few students at times. The handouts made the material much easier to understand.
I think Ty did a pretty good job at teaching. Considering the controversial issues studied, it would have been easy to inject his opinions into the subject matter to slant the viewpoints. I think Ty did a good job of remaining neutral. Ty seemed to have good responses & reasoning for the many challenges brought to the ideas presented. I found many of the readings worthwhile especially those in the first half of the course. It was interesting to learn about basic philosophical concepts. Overall, I enjoyed the challenge of re-organizing my thought pattern. It gave a new slant to my personal view of several subjects.
Fine, I especially enjoyed classes where students were debating ideas & issues. I wish this could have happened more, Ty did well at directing the course of these discussions.
I really enjoyed this class (except for all the work!) It gave me new insight to several issues. When you're 30+ years old, it's hard to find many approaches or subjects that causes one to at least re-examine his positions on a variety of subjects.
Thanks for teaching the class. I think I learned some things especially how to think.
Introduction to Logic
Ty was an excellent teacher. He conducted class well, and made sure that he explained all of the concepts fully.
Ty was an overall good teacher. He was friendly, energetic, and honest with the students. The material was communicated in an effective fun manor.
Ty was good at making up examples to help us understand concepts. Ty helps make the classroom atmosphere more friendly and non-threatening.

Introduction to Philosophy
Thourough, he got the point across. Though the material was sometimes a bit vague in terms of examples. The class was conducted well. I learned a lot from this class.

I have have to be quite honest with you. At first I hated this class and thought it was boring. But I really started enjoying it and feel like I learned a lot. I think your tests and grading standards are very fair. I've never had to take 2 midterms in the same class before but it was okay. Thanks!
Thanks for a good course in philosophy, Mr. Lightner!! I can certainly say that this course made me think a little bit about a lot of things. It's very rarely that most people think about things that are virtually unknowable about human beings and their existence and how we get here! Thanks again!!
Very passionate about topic.
He was a good teacher.
He tried to use examples students can relate to to explain concepts.
He kept to an organized pattern and voiced his opions and ideas well.
I think he's very enthusiastic in the information he relays. More class discussion about modern topics would be interesting.
