Archaeology

a hazy glimpse on a dim past giving a blurred vision of the future

News on excavations in South Africa seen from my viewpoint. Images and commentary will be added as they become available and lots of notes directly from my fieldnotes. So far this is the only one of its kind in South Africa. If someone finds another South African archaeology page with a high content, let me know.

  1. Lancaster Ridge Graveyard
Krugersdorp Date: 1996-11-18 Just started excavating an old unmarked graveyard in Krugersdorp near Johannesburg aand about 60 km from Pretoria. Seven so far and going strong!
Afrikaans version of the Krugersdorp excavation.

  2. Krugersdorp: Lancaster Ridge. The second report on the Krugersdorp Graveyard excavation. A total of 14 graves were excavated.

  3. Skeleton PIL56 - UP51
Pilanesberg Nature Reserve Date: 1996-11-3 Over this weekend Francois Coetzee and myself excavated a skeleton that he found while surveying in the Pilanesberg Nature Reserve - the prelimanary report. Busy writing the final story - this one has a double twist at the end. Even better than gold!

  4. The Thulamela story: Part 1
Kruger National Park Date:1996-7-25 During the last week in July we excavated a grave where we found a golden bracelet and a bracelet made from golden beads. In total some 291 golden beads were found. This is the story of Losha, who reached out and touched us from 500 years in the past.

  5. The Second grave at Thulamela: Ruler?
Kruger National Park Date:1996-7-7 During the second week in September, we excavated the second grave at Thulamela. This is that story as I experienced it on a daily basis, with extracts from my fieldnotes.

  6. Bugs in the Bush. Images of some creepy-and-not-so-creepy crawlies spotted in the bush.

  7. Mapungubwe. Ever heard of Mapungubwe? More gold stories! A first bit to start you wondering.
