Life the Universe and Everything
First of all you find yourself on this planet they call Earth. At that point you haven't formed any opinions about anything except the current state of your existance. If you are hungry you want food. If you are thirsty you want to satisfy the craving. In fact, some people may go through life only trying to satisfy this craving or that desire. Soon you find yourself at the end of your days satisfying that one last craving or desire.
At some point, some people, find the need to do more than satisfy a desire. Some may argue there are people who desire doing more than satisfying primal urges still falls under satisfying an urge or desire. The question then becomes, what could be an example of going beyond simply satisfying an urge or desire? Simply, what is meant by going beyond? What is the justification for doing more than satisfying an urge or desire?
At this point I would propose building community goes, beyond self-serving satisfaction and moves one to community-serving satisfaction. In pulling resources together one is then able to produce much more than any random group of individuals simply reacting to ones urges and desires. In this way one may choose to deny ones self a desire in order to delay being satisfied until the community could be satisfied. At this moment in our history (The History of Mankind.) we are struggling with the conflicts which arise between short-sighted self satisfiers and long term community satisfiers. This is now, but what will the future be like?
Communism failed even though the goal of community co-operation was a noble objective. Human desires were to powerful for a state mandated community minded evolution to take place. No one can force the human race to behave in a loving affectionate way. No one can force the human race to care for one another. We know all this because we saw Communism fail.
The only way to get the human race to want to evolve to the next social step is by immeadiate gratification for every self less action - the selfish one's are already rewarded. Capitalism provides much of this motivation by enabling people to perform services and create goods for finacial return. Capitalism is not a perfect system, because it enables people to accumilate wealth and thus provide fewer services for greater return. But for what capitalism does it does a very good job. The question is, how can the system be improved?
