What is the most important thing for a new muslim? To learn the prayers!!
For non-muslims the muslim prayer seems like an impossible task, how can you pray five
times a day? How can you learn all this in Arabic? Why do you have to pray in Arabic? And the answers
many come up with is "I could never be a muslim, because I'd never be able to pray five times a day" or
"I could never be a muslim, because I'd never be able to learn the prayers". These things occurred to me
many times while I was researching into Islam, but in fact this is nothing but lousy excuses that Satan is
whispering into our ears. I still have a long way to go that is for sure, but it is far from being an impossible
task and if you try your best with pure intention Allah will meet you half way and make it easy for you.
So where should one start? Well, I guess that depends on each individual but I started learning how to do
wudu (purification before prayer) and the movements and postures of the prayers. Then I started by
praying according to a guideline by an Islamic scholar and then slowly started learning the right Arabic
words and this is where I am right now, and as I learn more I put it into my prayers.And a good place to
start, and where I was adviced to start, is by learning the first chapter of the Quran, Surah Al Fatiha,
which is recited several times in all the prayers. Then little by little,
I learned other surahs and added those into my prayer routine.
