The Helm:
The helm or helmet was used to protect the head of the knight in combat and support his crest. In the 17th century helms were designed to designate different ranks of people (Soverign, peer, night, and gentleman). Today, although ignored, these helms are still only designated to those intitled to them.

The Helmet assigned to Kings and Princes is full faced, composed of gold.

The Helmet assigned to the Nobility is of steel, with five bars of gold; it is placed on the shield inclining to a profile.

The Helmet of Knights and Baronets, is the full-faced steel helmet, with the visor thrown back, which lacks bars.

The Helmet of Esquires, always is depicted in profile, is made of steel, with the visor closed.
