A Guide To Heraldry

Basic Descriptions:

Many people apply the words "arms," "crest," or "badge" indiscriminately to any insignia of heraldic appearence. These, and other terms of heraldry, have each a distinct meaning, and it is neccessary for the viewer at the outset to know the names of the various parts of an heraldic composition.

As a man (or woman) bore a shield, so he (or she) was said to bear the devices thereon, and such devices are accordingly called armorial bearings. This term now embraces not only arms, which are normally displayed on a shield or banner, but also crests, supporters, badges, etc.

A complete display of armorial bearings is termed an "achievement of arms," or "achievement." Its components are:

  1. Crest (not always present)
  2. Wreath (is what the Crest is placed on)
  3. Mantling
  4. Helm
  5. Shield
  6. Motto (often nonexistant)
  7. Supporters (not present in this photo)
