Supporters are figures which flank and uphold the shild in the case of peers, certain other dignitaries, and some corporations. It is not common for individuals to have supporters, unless they be a peer. Often Supporters appear in pairs but sometimes one is only used.

The supporters themselves must have some support; they must be given something to stand on. This is termed the scroll-work or ground.
