Great information site I lived in the village for 11 years and was not aware of many of the the incidents you talk about. My parents are in their mid 80's and still live there. I will send them something to read.

I'm a grandson of the late Alice Patrick BEM Who lived in Church Street. I now live in Cardiff. Super site well done to those that have produced it. Relatives of mine that still reside in the village are Rup and Freda Patrick on MAIN ROAD and John Maxwell in THE LIMES.

I live in Springfield House, Post Office Lane, which is part of what used to be Kempsey Lodge. The other part of the main house is still called Kempsey lodge, and what used to be the servants quarters is called Northwing. I believe you came to visit short y after we moved in (Oct. 1985)? I can't remember the name, but I remeber a Hong Kong connection. If I remember rightly, one of your ancesters had once lived at Kempsey lodge. I would like any information you have about the place, and would pleased to let you have anything I've got which would be of interest.

I have no connection with Kempsey other than an old letter I have, and it was while looking for information on the writer that I came across your site. The letter was written by a Thomas Hill in Kempsey in 1838 and he mentions several sisters (Mary, Eliza Emma) and brothers (John and ?Brian). However, in the 1840-1 directory there are no Hills listed. Does anyone know anything about this family? Just curious!

I've lived in Kempsey all my life and attended Kempsey School from 1942 until 1948. My teacher was Miss Winters and Mr Hirons was the headmaster, my single name was Clee. My mother, Violet Clee, lived in Kempsey all her life and was born in 1907. This is my first time on the Internet and it is lovely to see something so familiar on the information super-highway.

My ancestors lived in Severn Stoke and Kempsey during the 1600s to 1800s with various spellings eg Stonall, Stoneall, Stonehall etc. I would be grateful for any information on these names. I visit Kempsey quite often. I have researched a great deal at Wor cs. Record Office.
There is a Stonehall Common to the east of Kempsey Common, maybe there is some link - Andy.

nice site - well done please can anyone help me on a little quest? my father was based at Defford? airfield near upton around 1946 & tells of hearing a ghost(?) horse gallping past - i took this with a pinch of salt until i saw the site! any info?
Defford Airfield is still there. It is about 2 miles east of Kempsey Common. As the ghost story says that the horse "went full gallop through the village and across Kempsey Common with the naked Cavalier clutching the reins in h s death grip", it may be possible that the horse got as far as Defford - Andy.

Enjoyed finding your site on Kempsey. My great grandfather was William Charles Hodges (1852-1916) - a carpenter/builder and an undertaker in Kempsey living at 'Parkhouse'. I would love to know if anyone has information or photos about the family.
Parkhouse is still there, it's near the corner of Old Road North and the A38. As a kid I went there often, it's a big place with a large garden running down to the Brook, and backs onto the school - Andy.

I've just discovered the site and was fascinated. I live at 'The Old Vicarage' and would be most interested to know more about its history.

Hi Gordon, There's more information on the page on Rev. Purton's speech about the history of Kempsey. Look about halfway down, just before the Winslow information. Andy

Greetings Andy, May I suggest a heading for some of Kempsey's Famous Sons? Robert Vaughan Gorle, V.C. of Napleton, Kempsey, enlisted in the Royal Artillery and won the Victoria Cross as an acting Sub-Lieutenant in Belgium in 1918. He later immigrated to South Africa an is buried there. His father, Harry Vaughan Gorle of Kempsey was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for service in South Africa. Your site is a great delight to me as the Gorle family has long been associated with Kempsey. The first record I have is a Walter Gorle (1427) and a family tree that begins in 1595 - 400 years! Anyone visiting your site and willing to exchange geneological information would be most welcome to me. Blessings to you and your project, Rev. Howard R. Gorle, M.Div.

Thanks Howard. Click here for the Gorle page - Andy
