Alexander Neckham
"Alexander Neckham, Abbot of Cirencester, was born on the same night as Richard the Lion-heart, and was bought up as his foster-brother. He was the first Englishman to write about chess, silkworms and the the mariner's compass. He died at Kempsey in 1217."
