This was owned by a young lady by the name of Mary Owens. She also owned "Outlines of Roman History" as mentioned earlier on my literary favorites main page. Miss Owens had a bad habit of writing in her books. There are notes everywhere in the book, even across pictures!
I really like the content of this book. A rare look at American literature in the early 1900's. Black and white, along with grey scale platelettes are throughout the book. There's a picture of Edgar Allan Poes cottage at Fordham, from the etching by Charles F.W. Mielatz. A pen etching of Abraham Lincoln by R.M. Chandler, from a photograph made in 1864. Fourteen full-page illustrations in all are in this book as well as innumerable drawings. This is a nice rainy day reading book. I like to sit back and listen to the rain and wind while enjoying reading about such classics like "My Captain, Captain", "The Columbiad", "Gettysburg Oration", and "The Saga of King Olaf". |
