The Winooski Bridge

The Winooski Bridge

Machines for heavy work
expose fiber under concrete clouds,
while hardhats emanate daylight.
The Winooski bridge is being restored.

Last spring unimagined burdens
in groaning tons of cramped modernity
bruised its 1928 spine and ribs.

Now, workers bound to engineers
are dressed in working clothes,
are harnessed to dangle from i-beams
and swarm under steel triangles.

Scratching signatures into girders
they ignore the bits of asphalt
that do inevitably fall and sink
while breaking out old pavements.
