The History of the British Army in WW I

A Comprehensive Study

British Soldier in Standard Gear

In 1914, the British Expeditionary Force that landed in France totaled slightly more than 120,000 men. In comparison to the other European Armies, it was dwarfed, but the quality of those men in battle proved to be decisive in the failure of the Schlieffen Plan. Throughout the war, in France and Belgium, in the Dardanelles, Palestine, and in Salonika, British and Commonwealth soldiers from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Africa fought with valor and determination against the Central Powers. By 1918, close to 4,000,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers had fought in the various campaigns of the war, and nearly 1,000,000 of them had become casualties. This site is dedicated to those men who fought so bravely in one of the greatest struggles in history. May their actions never be forgotten even as time fades the traces of their impact on history.
