Address by Fmr. Pres. Bill Clinton

Sponsored by the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives.
Topic: Leadership & National & International Issues.

 [Tuesday, October 09, 2001] - Washington, DC

[Eldon's comments]

I was impressed by the use of global systems theory in analyzing
recent events. The main points were about global inter-dependence.

Clinton pointed out four positive aspects of increasing inter-dependence,
and four negative results.

Then he described a progressive way to address these issues.

Also, he pointed out that, in paraphrase; America was founded on the
idea that no one group has the all the answers, and no religion
is "the one true religion." He said that the fundamentalists
are certain of thir "truth", but will not acknowledge that others,
specifically Israeli's, have their own version of the "truth".

 Former President Clinton Urges Respect

By Marilee Miller

WASHINGTON -- Former President Clinton warned Americans against
allowing the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the
Pentagon to have a divisive impact on the nation.

"The terrorists cannot win unless they affect the way we think
and act," he said. "They want us to be afraid of them. They want
us to be afraid of each other. They want us to be afraid of the
future."

"We have to show people all over the world that America is not
the enemy of any faith or people," he told an audience of a
sold-out crowd Tuesday night at the Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts in Washington.

I thought it most interesting that, on Larry King night before last,
while he had a panel of urbane and sophisticated, professional Arab
Muslims, including the spokesman for al-Jazeera, and Hanan Ashrawi -
people who presumably can speak for and to their peers in *world Islam*
- when one US caller asked the panel whhy non-Muslims - *infidels*
are totally forbidden access to Mecca and the Kaaba, none of them
had any real answer, only somewhat condescending mumbles. And when
a face-hidden R.A.W.A. spokeswoman, also a panelist, was asked by
another caller whether any of the *Behind the Veil* film exposing
the atrocities committed against women by Taliban had been run on
al-Jazeera (which, lest we forget, regularly screens bin Laden's
videotaped propaganda rants) - the answer was *no*. Other panelists
were asked in turn about the *Veil*footage - including the al-Jazeera
stooge - and again there were mumbles adding up to no. Clearly the
ideals of Liberty, Tolerance, Equality and Justice are NOT what these
folks are about...
