a petalo... Petal by petal... |
It is, my life, like a blooming cherry: petal by petal... This was composed at the "hanami" (cherry blossom viewing party) of Spring 1995 in Koganei Park in Tokyo. It was an unfogettable scenery: all the trees in full blossom, the fine weather, the faintly sweet perfume of the flowers and the petals gliding on us like large snowflakes... The full blossom lasts few days... And I felt that it was the perfect image of my life: in full bloom and hence starting to loose his petals, one by one. There is no sadness in this image, but a tender and affectionate acceptance of the life cycle. |
is my pen name as a haijin I discovered Haiku in 1972, when living in Kyoto, and I started to study it becoming more and more fascinated by this short and essential kind of poetry. Haiku, to be a living poem, can't be written sitting at your desk: must gush out from an actual emotion, you can't just sit down and decide to write a Haiku. It must have its source in the heart, not in the brain. In 1974, I was bestowed my Japanese haijin pen name of "Shoan" by the Zen Master Moriyama Roshi. The Sho part of my name means "shining" and the An means "hut" or "hermitage". I wrote several Haiku, both in Japanese and in Italian: some 20 of my Haiku in Japanese are also published in Kyoto in a literary magazine ("Himawari" = The sunflower) devoted to Haiku. It seems that I was the first foreigner to publish Haiku in Japanese in a Japanese monthly... I studied and practiced Haiku for all those years and, in 1991, I wrote my Graduation Thesis in Japanese Literature on "Ancient and Modern Haiku" being awarded of the maximum points and honors (summa cum laude). I also taught Haiku in Italy. |
