La Cappella Sistina

The Sistine Chapel was built between 1475 and 1483, when the Pope was Sisto IV della Rovere, and it is to him that the Chapel owes its name. This Chapel has originally served as Palatine Chapel, now is the place in which new popes are elected.
The architectural plans were made by Baccio Pontelli and the construction work was supervised by Giovannino de' Dolci. Was built using the exact dimensions of the Solomon Temple, as we can read in the Old Testament, in fact the Chapel is a rectangle and measures 40.93 meters long by 13.41 meters wide. It is 20.70 meters high and is roofed by a flattened barrel vault, with little side vaults over the centered windows.
The wall paintings were executed by the most famous painters of that time, such as Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Pietro Perugino, Cosimo Rosselli, Luca Signorelli and their respective disciples, like, for exemple Pinturicchio, Piero di Cosimo and Bartolomeo della Gatta.

In 1508 Pope Giulio II della Rovere commissioned Michelangelo Buonarroti to repaint the ceiling; the work was completed between 1508 and 1512. After that, being commissioned by Pope Paolo III Farnese, he painted also, between 1535 and 1541, the Last Judgement over the altar. Also if the nudes on the vaults did'nt scandalize the prelates of that time, the nudes of the Last Judgement did, so, little after, a painter was commissioned to paint "drapes" to cover the nudity of the saints and of the Christ in this painting. This painter is known as "il braghettone" (the underpants maker).
