inner strength's May Ruminations

May 2000
This month has been filled with working several jobs. More than I feel sometimes I can handle, but invigorating! One of the most enjoyable jobs I am doing is working with Census 2000 [USA] as an enumerator. Interesting in the fact that I see all sides of human nature when I visit others' homes. Some are very nice, while others kick me off their property for being a federal government employee. I don't feel like a powerful fed--I am just *me*. It is also very interesting to meet people from all over the world and to be able to communicate with them on some basic human level. A smile is universal.

Working 7 days a week also reminds me of my childhood when I was labeled as lazy by my family because I preferred to play sports and read to working on the farm. Working with the census and having to survive high heat and humidity, I now understand better the sense of achievements my family must have felt sweating in those hot tobacco rows years ago. There is something refreshing about being outdoors and surviving [and thriving] the elements...and also...a feeling of closeness with nature.
